Real-time quantitative imaging of RTV silicone pyrolysis

Quantitative microstructural analysis of Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone pyrolysis at high temperatures is presented. RTV used as a bonding agent in multiple industries, particularly filling gaps ablative tiles for hypersonic (re-)entry vehicles and fire prevention. Decomposition resolved real time using situ high-temperature X-ray computed micro-tomography. Tomographies are acquired every 45 seconds four different linear heating rates ranging from 7 to 54∘C/min. The microstructure below 5 μm/pixel, allowing quantitative the micro-structural evolution porous network development. Results rate dependent, evaluated bulk sample volume change, porosity, pore size, densification attenuation. outcome this work critical develop multi-physics models thermal response.
